Lately, I've been reading a lot and it feels great. I got back into reading this summer and recently did a post about some of the books I'd read and had checked out. I thought I'd do another one. :) If you're on goodreads and want to becomes friends, please email me. I love reading through what other people are reading. I've found some great books that way.
In my previous post, I was about to start The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Read it last month and I loved it. It was different than my typical genre and I loved branching out a little bit. :) I highly recommend this to book to anyone who likes to read. I loved the characters - they felt like real people to me. It transports you back to the civil rights movement in the 60's. If you haven't read this, go and buy it or check it out from the library.
This is more of what I've been reading lately. I confess, I really do enjoy the Young Adult books. :) They're quick easy readsbut the still suck me in every time. lol Here's the GoodReads description:
"For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.
Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever."
This is the start of a series - I can't wait until Linger, the sequel to Shiver, comes out next year. I really loved this book. The point of view changes back and forth between the two main characters, which typically I'm not a fan of, but in this book it really worked well.
I'd had this on my to-read list for a couple of months and my friend, Marilyn, posted her review of it on GoodReads and it jumped to the top of my list. I decided to just buy it since it was paperback at Costco. Another YA book in the paranormal romance genre (see a trend here?). I loved it! It was an interesting storyline and I really liked all of the characters. This is the 1st of 6 books in the Immortals series. I bought the sequel, Blue Moon (see below) before I even finished this book. Here's the GoodReads description in case you're interested...
"Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s life story by touch. Going out of her way to shield herself from human contact to suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school— but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste. Ever sees Damen and feels an instant recognition. He is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy, and he holds many secrets. Damen is able to make things appear and disappear, he always seems to know what she’s thinking— and he’s the only one who can silence the noise and the random energy in her head. She doesn’t know who he really is— or what he is. Damen is equal parts light and darkness, and he belongs to an enchanted new world where no one ever dies."
If anyone local wants to borrow this, give me a call. I'd love to discuss a couple questions I have about the book :)
In case you can't guess, Blue Moon is the sequel to Evermore. I won't post a description in case someone wants to read it and not have something spoiled about what happens in Evermore. :) if you want to read more about it, look here. I really enjoyed this book as well. It wasn't quite as good as the first - but still a great read. I loved the author's descriptions (especially about Summerland - a location in the book). The third book in the series, Shadowland, will be released on November 17th. So if you think you'll like this series, you can finish book 1 & 2 before then. :)
Now, before you think all I read is YA fiction, I do read other things. lol :) I just finished up this week reading, The Sugar Queen. Here's the GoodReads description:
"In this irresistible follow-up to her New York Times bestselling debut, Garden Spells, author Sarah Addison Allen tells the tale of a young woman whose family secrets—and secret passions—are about to change her life forever.
Twenty-seven-year-old Josey Cirrini is sure of three things: winter in her North Carolina hometown is her favorite season, she’s a sorry excuse for a Southern belle, and sweets are best eaten in the privacy of her hidden closet. For while Josey has settled into an uneventful life in her mother’s house, her one consolation is the stockpile of sugary treats and paperback romances she escapes to each night…. Until she finds it harboring none other than local waitress Della Lee Baker, a tough-talking, tenderhearted woman who is one part nemesis—and two parts fairy godmother…
Fleeing a life of bad luck and big mistakes, Della Lee has decided Josey’s clandestine closet is the safest place to crash. In return she’s going to change Josey’s life—because, clearly, it is not the closet of a happy woman. With Della Lee’s tough love, Josey is soon forgoing pecan rolls and caramels, tapping into her startlingly keen feminine instincts, and finding her narrow existence quickly expanding.
Before long, Josey bonds with Chloe Finley, a young woman who makes the best sandwiches in town, is hounded by books that inexplicably appear whenever she needs them, and—most amazing of all—has a close connection to Josey’s longtime crush.
As little by little Josey dares to step outside herself, she discovers a world where the color red has astonishing power, passion can make eggs fry in their cartons, and romance can blossom at any time—even for her. It seems that Della Lee’s work is done, and it’s time for her to move on. But the truth about where she’s going, why she showed up in the first place—and what Chloe has to do with it all—is about to add one more unexpected chapter to Josey’s fast-changing life.
Brimming with warmth, wit, and a sprinkling of magic, here is a spellbinding tale of friendship, love—and the enchanting possibilities of every new day."
Sorry, that was a little long but the Amazon one didn't give enough description. I really loved this book. I read it this week while on the treadmill - that hour flew by each time I was reading it. I loved that there was a little bit of magic sprinkled in the book. It wasn't the focus of the book but added a touch of whimsy to the book. It was a little predictable, but I still enjoyed reading the story as it unfolded. :)
I just started reading a book called More Than You Know this morning. So far so good. It was a little slow but now that I kind of know what is going on (each chapter changes time weaving in and out of 2 different stories) it has caught my attention. I'm trying not to read it until I get to the gym on Monday morning so I'll have something to read next week while on the treadmill. From the reviews I've seen on GoodReads it is going to get a little scary :) Good to read at the gym I think instead of at home. lol Here's the description from GoodReads:
"In a small town called Dundee on the coast of Maine, an old woman named Hannah Gray begins her story: "Somebody said 'true love is like ghosts, which everyone talks about and few have seen.' I've seen both and I don't know how to tell you which is worse." Hannah has decided, finally, to leave a record of the passionate and anguished long-ago summer in Dundee when she met Conary Crocker, the town bad boy and love of her life. This spare, piercing, and unforgettable novel bridges two centuries and two intense love stories as Hannah and Conary's fate is interwoven with the tale of a marriage that took place in Dundee a hundred years earlier. "
I'd love to hear what you're reading!! Post in my comments :)
